I arrived at the train station in Ciudad
Chihuahua at 6:15 a.m. eager to begin this adventure.
The ticket on the Clase Económica (second
class) train was only about $50.
The first rays of sunlight were already
at play, and I felt a sense of boyhood excitement at merely
the prospect of riding on a passenger train for the first
time. The sight of the conductor in his uniform and
conductor's hat seemed a glimpse into the past. Within
just a few minutes we were underway.
I settled comfortably into my window seat,
thrilling to the sound of the whistle and the low hum of
the locomotive as we made our way slowly through the city
of Chihuahua and into the unknown of this much heralded
adventure. Judging from the faces of the other passengers,
I could see I was not alone in this childlike sense of anticipation.
