The scenery on the east to west part of the train ride is considered to be the lessor scenery, but I could not pry myself away from the open windows between the cars.

No matter how barren the land, people will find a way to inhabit it.  Throughout the trip through the desert we saw dozens of small homesteads like this one.  These people are probably 100 miles from a city of any size, yet obviously wish to live no where else.

Interesting rock formations soon begin to appear beside the tracks.

One of the amazing things about this railway is that while it climbs to a height of 8,000 above sea level at the highest point the angle of descent never exceeds 2.5 degrees.
