Points of Interest
Batopilas, Mexico
Like many of the side trips into the canyon, the one to Batopilas is one you should set aside a day or two to make. Founded in 1708 after the discovery of silver in the mountains, Batopilas is about an 80 mile drive from Creel and is a small town of about 1,000 persons. It sits at the bottom of the Batopilas canyon (5,904 feet), and the drive to the canyon itself is said to be a spectacular experience in terms of scenery. This is not a drive you wish to make on your own, of course. You will be able to find plenty of experienced guides in Creel. Once in Batopilas, you can visit an abandoned silver mine where you can actually walk the old mine shafts into the mountain. The Satevó mission is nearby which was completed by the Jesuits in 1764. There are several antique shops and small hotels and a few good restaurants. The Raramuri frequently come into town for supplies.
Most people who live in the area ride horses for transportation.
